Gershovich, who was arrested while working on a story in Yekaterinburg, is the first American journalist since the Cold War to be charged with espionage. Amid persistent rumors that he could be exchanged as part of a prisoner swap, Evan’s pre-trial detention is regularly extended.

We speak to Evan’s friend, The Guardian's Russia correspondent Pjotr Sauer, about the first anniversary of Evan's arrest, the conditions he faces in prison, how he is doing, and the possible future of his case.
